Book Review: I Became a Christian and All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt

I Became a Christian and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt
by Vince Antonucci
Baker Books 2008
Submitted by Diane Busch

This is a great book for Christians needing a jolt out of complacency. What does being a Christian really mean? We cannot just call ourselves Christians, we must really put Christ first in our lives. We need to be hungry for God. We need to "abide in Christ", as if we were one person--not just have a relationship with him. We need to spend large quantities of time with him "face to face".

This books is written with much humor, and it is amazing how quickly Mr. Antonucci can go from silly to poignant.

He says it is impossible to love God and love people in a hurry. Jesus didn't hurry. "By walking with Him I learn to slow down and live at the speed of love". We cannot live our lives seeking our own happiness. As Christ followers, we must die to self and choose to serve others.

If we are truly living our lives as Christians ("little Christs") then we will touch the sick, love the unlovable, encourage the depressed, and help God's lost children find their way home.

Longing for God
Richard Foster
InterVarsity Press, March 2009

"Reading Longing for God is like stepping into an unfamiliar room and finding a wonderful group of vital and brilliant brothers and sisters in the way of Christ, reaching out to us from across the ages and from all kinds of personal characteristics and circumstances. We need to reach back and let them help us to know the fullness of life in the kingdom of God for who and where we are now. The spiritual impoverishment so widespread today among Christians is largely due to disconnection from 'the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.' The authors have opened doors into 'the unsearchable riches of Christ.' Let's go in."

Christianity in Crisis: 21st Century
Hank Hanegraaff
Thomas Nelson, March 2009

Nearly two decades ago Hank Hanegraaff's award-winning Christianity in Crisis alerted the world to the dangers of a cultic movement within Christianity that threatened to undermine the very foundation of biblical faith. But in the 21st century, there are new dangers-new teachers who threaten to do more damage than the last. These are not obscure teachers that Hanegraaff unmasks. We know their names. We have seen their faces, sat in their churches, and heard them shamelessly preach and promote the false pretexts of a give-to-get gospel. They are virtual rock stars who command the attention of presidential candidates and media moguls. Through make-believe miracles, urban legends, counterfeit Christs, and twisted theological reasoning, they peddle an occult brand of metaphysics that continues to shipwreck the faith of millions around the globe: "God cannot do anything in this earthly realm unless we give Him permission." "Keep saying it-'I have equality with God'-talk yourself into it." "Being poor is a sin." "The Jews were not rejecting Jesus as Messiah; it was Jesus who was refusing to be the Messiah to the Jews!" "You create your own world the same way God creates His. He speaks, and things happen; you speak, and they happen." Christianity in Crisis: 21st Century exposes darkness to light, pointing us back to a Christianity centered in Christ.

So Beautiful
Leonard Sweet
David C. Cook, March 2009

Using the poignant life of John Newton as a touchstone, Sweet calls for the re-union of these three essential, complementary strands of the Christian life. Far from a novel idea, Sweet shows how this structure is God's original intent and shares the simply beautiful design for His church.
