Manager's Musings
Sometimes I just can't understand why a great book doesn't seem to catch on amongst our patrons. "Wake Up Generation: You Have a Life...How Will You Use It?" by Paige Omartian is one of those books.
I believe every teenager and young twenty-something should read this book, written by a 21-year-old recording artist who battled cancer as a child, which put her on a journey of inspiring others to live out their purpose through her music and story. She says that a growing epidemic of apathy has caused many to sleepwalk through life, not realizing their dreams, mission, and identity are at stake. This book can transform you, ignite your passion, help you discover your God-given purpose, and let you see how precious your life really is.
This book makes a great graduation gift!

“We’re living in crazy times right now between the news that seems to
get crazier every day and all the uncertainly throughout society in
general,” concludes Cooper. “Sometimes it doesn’t seem like there’s
hope, and sure you can choose to give up, but why not face it ‘Awake and
Alive’? Why let what’s going on around you keep you down when there’s
so much hope that a new day can bring? Everything we sing about on this
album is something someone can relate to, and if anything, the songs
will let you know you’re not alone.”

When everything is on the line, great men turn to strength and faith—in football and in life.
In Guts, Grace, and Glory Dr. Jim Grassi shows how to incorporate faith and endurance on a daily basis—not just to win at football, but to win at life. Anecdotes from the greatest players in the game—Johnny Unitas, Tim Tebow, Paul Bear Bryant, RGIII, Bryan "Bart" Starr, Matt Hasselbeck, and more—and their coaches demonstrate how glory, on and off the field, hinges on a solid relationship with God and the guts with which one plays out life’s challenges. The book touches on several life-affirming topics including setting your heart and mind on the eternal, living your life as a model of Christ, and building a legacy that lasts.

Have a New Teenager by Friday: From Mouthy and Moody to Respectful and Responsible in 5 Days
By: Dr. Kevin Leman
Parents may survive the terrible twos and the first years of school all
right, but the teenage years bring entirely new and alien creatures. So,
parents have a choice: either send that teenager to boarding school and
visit him when he reaches normalcy again (in about ten years) or choose
to experience the best, most fun years of life--together! The secret is
in how the parental cards are played.
With his signature wit and commonsense psychology, internationally recognized family expert and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman helps parents communicate with the "whatever" generation establish healthy boundaries and workable guidelines gain respect even admiration --from their teenager turn selfish behavior around navigate the critical years with confidence pack their teenager's bags with what they need for life now and in the future become the major difference maker in their teenager's life
Teenagers can successfully face the many temptations of adolescence and grow up to be great adults. And parents, Dr. Leman says, are the ones who can make all the difference, because they count far more in their teenager's life than they'll ever know . . . even if their teenager won't admit it (at least until she's in college and wants to know how to do the laundry).

Hope for a Widow's Heart: Encouraging Reflections for Your Journey
By: Quin Sherrer
Authentic Publishers / 2013 / Paperback
Only a widow
knows what it's like to lose her spouse -the overwhelming chasm of
grief, loss, confusion, and even anger. In this touching, heart-felt
book from veteran best-selling author Quin Sherrer, widows will receive
practical help, hope, and healing for the road forward. Written in
short, easy, devotional-style readings for those going through the grief
process, Quin walks hand in hand, sharing her own story as a widow, as
well as the stories of many others who have walked the same road.
Receive hope and healing after a loss as you walk directly into the arms
of the Savior. There is life, indeed, after death.
A tattoo can
tell a lot about a person. Some reflect a rebellious season, like the
demons that cover Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers. Some express
religious ties, like actor Mark Wahlberg’s once tattooed rosary. Some
are symbols of love and loyalty; Some serve as remembrances, like rapper
Lil Wayne’s teardrops, representing deaths of loved ones.
Inked by Janet E. Kusiak and Kimberly D. Goad uses the language of tattoos to explore the question: what has marked your life? Is it a deep well of pain? Is it emotional baggage? Is it depression? In spite of events that are so deeply etched into our hearts, we have the power to change the marks that life makes on us.
An estimated quarter of Americans ages 18-50 have a tattoo. What better way to show how one of the most polarizing of cultural icons can, in fact, be a metaphor for what people have in common? Using stories and slang from tattoo culture, the authors look at the new way Christ desires that we be inked by Him, as the authors explore the marks that have been made on our hearts.

With high hopes, Daphne Ballinger lands her dream job at The New York Times.
But it's not long until writing about weddings becomes a painful
reminder of her own failed romance, and her love of the city slowly
sours as well. Is it time to give up the Big Apple for her small
hometown of Appleton?
When her eccentric Aunt Dee passes away and leaves a sizeable estate to Daphne, going back home is an easy choice. What isn’t easy is coming to terms with the downright odd clauses written into the will.
Daphne only stands to inherit the estate if she agrees to her aunt's very specific posthumous terms -- personal and professional. And if she fails to comply, the sprawling old Victorian house shall be bequeathed to . . . Aunt Dee’s cats.
And if Daphne thinks that’s odd, wait until she finds out an array of secrets about Aunt Dee's life, and how imperfect circumstances can sometimes lead to God's perfect timing.

A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet: Southern Stories of Faith, Family, and Fifteen Pounds of Bacon
By: Sophie Hudson
Tyndale House / 2013 / Paperback
There’s
nothing quite like family—for good or bad. But in a world where we
sometimes know more about the Kardashians than we do the people sleeping
right down the hall, it’s easy to forget that walking through life with
our family offers all sorts of joy wrapped up in the seemingly mundane.
There’s even a little bit of sacred sitting smack-dab in the middle of
the ordinary. And since time’s-a-wastin’, we need to be careful that we
don’t take our people—and their stories—for granted. Whether it’s a
marathon bacon-frying session, a road trip gone hysterically wrong, or a
mother-in-law who makes every trip to the grocery store an adventure,
author Sophie Hudson reminds us how important it is to slow down and
treasure the day-to-day encounters with the people we love the most.
Written in the same witty style as Sophie’s BooMama blog, A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet is a cheerful, funny, and tender account of Sophie’s very Southern family. It’s a look into the real lives of real people—and a real, loving God right in the middle of it all.
