I Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Author Gary Thomas may be best known for his book “Sacred Marriage”, but in his newest book he broaches a subject that many in the church are afraid to touch: the fact that we need to take care of our bodies by eating healthy and exercising so that we will be in our best shape to serve God and do kingdom work. He has honest discussions about the words “gluttony” and “sloth” used in the Bible, saying that these two things make us less useful and less prepared to do any good work. He talks about his own struggles and the changes he has made, as well as using many examples from other peoples’ lives to give inspiration and encouragement to the reader.

In Every Body Matters, Thomas offers superior motivation for Christians to “recognize we might have grown a bit soft—in our bodies and in our souls and that there may even be a connection between the two. The lack of physical discipline can undercut and even erode spiritual growth. We want to get in good physical shape so we can become, as Paul writes, ‘instruments for special purposes, made holy useful to the Master and prepared for any good work.’ We are vessels set apart to serve God.” Thomas says, “Christians who don’t take their health seriously don’t take their mission seriously. God gave us souls--and bodies to go with them. To be fully alive, fully human, fully the people God created us to be, we have to care for our bodies, discipline them, and make them our servants in our service to God.”

“Being silent about eating too much because we don’t want to sound judgmental, or refusing to address laziness because it can sound elitist or we think it’s none of our business, is to allow and even encourage fellow church members to live lives in which there is no inspiration to be made holy, useful to the Master, and prepared to do any good work. Let’s create a new kind of environmental influence—one that demonstrates how we treat our bodies as a form of Christian stewardship, a vehicle for evangelism, and preparation for the good work that God has planned for us to do. The spiritual disciplines are the place to start, but their effectiveness is magnified when joined with physical discipline.

For some of us this may be the kick in the seat of the pants that we need. Thomas gives tips for making changes and setting goals. This book would be appropriate for any age or maturity of Christian reader from teenagers on up. Included in the back of the book are questions for discussion and reflection for each chapter.

If you are a fan of the great coach and leader Tony Dungy, then you will enjoy his daily insights, reminders, and challenges in The One Year Uncommon Life Daily Challenge. This motivational devotional is great for men, but women can also be inspired by his wisdom and encouragement, as most of the content is not gender specific.

In the introduction Dungy suggests that if you and your friends or co-workers read this same devotional each day, then you can share insights or have discussions via email, phone, or social networking.

This book is set up in 7 themes (one for each day of the week) which are: Core, Family, Friends, Potential, Mission, Influence, and Faith. Each day's reading includes a scripture passage, the text of his message for the day, and an Uncommon Key, which gets to the core of the day's theme, often by adding a challenge, reminder, or hard question to ponder.

In the back of the book there is an alphabetical Scripture index so you can find a devotional to go along with a certain scripture.

This book is a practical, motivating, and challenging tool to keep you focused on following Jesus and growing in your faith for 2012. I highly recommend it.

We are very enthusiastic about this New Living Translation study Bible devotional by Tyndale House. Because it is based on the 4 gospels, we expected it to start with Matthew 1 and end with John 21, but were delighted by the interesting chronological layout. Each week has a theme in the life of Jesus, starting with "Jesus' Coming Is Announced" and ending with "Jesus Gives Final Instructions". For each week there are 6 daily readings, which include "Reading the Word" - scripture passages intertwined from all the gospels, "Setting the Scene" - background and explanation of the passages, "Getting Personal" - some great discussion or reflection questions, and ending with "Talking to God" - which is sometimes a prayer to pray and other times is a prayer prompt of how to pray about that day's topic.

Also, very helpful, are the two indexes in the back. The Topical Index, allows one to look up a topic of interest and find which week and day there is a devotional study on that topic. The Scripture Index, enables one to look up a scripture passage and find which week and day there is a devotional study on that passage.

We highly recommend you purchase this devotional to begin the new year in January. Or even better, get it in time to begin reading in mid December, so that you will be on the second week of devotions, titled "Jesus is Born", during the week of Christmas.

Having read the controversial "Love Wins: a Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived" by Rob Bell, earlier this year, (and generally liking it, although having difficulties with parts of it), I felt compelled to read "Erasing Hell" to get another Christian author's perspective on these topics and to get scriptural backing for various views on hell. (See my earlier review of Bell's book on this blog.) I am grateful to Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle, and also to all the other authors, who this year jumped right in to research scripture and write about this hot button topic of hell.

I like the spirit in which "Erasing Hell" is written. The authors were not out to bash Rob Bell, but to delve into scripture and really wrestle to find some answers to questions like: Is hell real? Why did God make hell? What is hell like? Who goes to hell? What did Jesus do to save us from hell? What can we do to not go to hell?

The problem is that we don't like to talk about Hell because it is awful, terrible and ugly. We would rather talk about God's love, heaven, and all the happy stuff. But we can't bury the parts of the Bible or the things that God said that we don't like. We have to take all of it. God is love, but he also is just. God made heaven, but he also made hell. What do we do with the things of God that we don't like? We can't pick and choose what we like about God. God is God. God is Creator. God is Almighty. God is Holy. God is just. God hates sin. God punishes those who do not put their faith in His son Jesus. At the end of the day we have to choose whether we can love and honor and obey and serve a God who made Hell.

Jesus talked a lot about Hell, mostly to warn people about it. This was a loving thing to do. Jesus didn't speak about Hell just so we could study, debate, and write books about it. He did it so we would live holy lives and not go to Hell. Our belief in Hell should rescue our complacent hearts from passivity.

God has the right to do whatever He pleases (Psalm 115:3). God is perfect and right in all He does. God invented justice and knows what unbelievers deserve. God is free to do whatever he wants...wrath, power, glory, mercy, etc. We must let God be God. He alone decides how he will deal with people. Does the Potter have the right to do whatever He wants with the clay? Yes. Can the clay say to the Potter, "you messed up; let me show you a better way to mold me?" No.

Isaiah 55:8-9 - "My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the Lord. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.

If you have read any books in the Mitford series by Jan Karon, then you already know and love Father Tim. If you are new to these delightful books, you can jump right in with this book and not feel like you have missed anything. (Although, I am sure that when you are finished, you will want to go back and read the other Mitford and Father Tim books.)

This delightful book takes place in Ireland. Father Tim Kavanagh, the beloved retired Episcopal priest and his wife, Cynthia, are on vacation at a Bed & Breakfast Inn in County Sligo. Before long there is a mystery to solve. Father Tim has daily adventures and Cynthia is laid up with an injured ankle. They both are reading a journal from the bookshelves of the inn to learn about the history. The food, the people, the history, and the character of Ireland are women through each page. I found myself smiling every day as I immersed myself in the story.

This book discusses the universal question people ask: “Do good people go to heaven?” If good people go to heaven, who decides who is good enough? What if we just miss the mark by a little bit? If God decides who or what is good enough, why didn’t He tell us how good we have to be in terms we understand? Most “religions” answer the question, but Christianity is different. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; No man comes to the Father but by me.” Jesus made the sacrifice. We just have to believe and accept his free gift of salvation.

Stanley concludes that Christianity is true and Christianity is fair. This is a great little book for the Christian, non-Christian, skeptic, questioner, or seeker. If you can’t read the whole book, I highly suggest you read the last chapter.

Fans of Karen Kingsbury novels are familiar with the Flanigan family and the Baxter and Blake families. This is another great book in a long line of interwoven stories about these Christian families. The series starts with book 1 "Leaving", focusing on Bailey Flanigan, whose dream is to perform on Broadway, and on her family, and on her relationships with guys (namely Tim, Cody & Brandon).

In this installment Bailey finally gets to be a part of the Broadway musical "Hairspray" and moves to New York City. It seems that Brandon and she are falling in love, but she can never really get Cody out of her head. Cody is falling in love with Cheyenne, but he can never really get Bailey out of his head. We must all wait for book 3 "Longing" to see how Bailey's love story will turn out.
In New York City, Bailey has trials to deal with, such as the death of her fellow cast member, Chrissy, and feeling like other cast members don't like her and her Christianity.

As Bailey matures and learns life lessons, so do the other characters in the story, including Landon Blake, who learns that he has COPD and cannot fight fires anymore. Cody learns lessons too, as he helps Cheyenne in her recovery, coaches the Lyle High football team, and relates with his mother, a recovering drug addict.

One theme of this book is that there is a cost to pursuing dreams. Lessons must always be learned along the way.

Although this is Book 1 of the Bailey Flanigan series, it reads like the continuing story of all your favorite characters, if you have been reading Karen Kingsbury novels for a few years. It picks up where "Take Four" (Book 4 of the Above the Line series) left off. Yet, if you have never read these previous book, you can start here and not miss a beat.

Beloved Bailey Flanigan pursues her dream of being on Broadway. Cody Coleman pursues his dream of being a football coach. And the saga of their "on again, off again" relationship continues. Her future is uncertain; his future is uncertain. Will there futures ever merge?

Throughout the book you have the opportunity to experience life in several places, as Bailey and her family live in Bloomington, Indiana, but they travel to New York City and Malibu, California. You also get the sense of what it would be like to be famous and followed by cameras and reporters everywhere you go.

Bailey's Christian life is an example that all young women should aspire to. There is much to be learned from these fictional characters about family life, prayer and being a follower of Christ in all circumstances.

The Unplanned documentary is the true story of Abby Johnson who began as a volunteer at Planned Parenthood when she was a college student because she wanted to help women. After graduation, she worked her way up in the organization until she was the director of a Texas Planned Parenthood clinic. Abby grew up in a Christian home that was pro-life, but she was convinced she was doing the right thing in helping women in crisis. She was so brain-washed with the rhetoric she was taught, that she even had two abortions herself before she was married and didn't think of it as killing her babies but ending pregnancies. In the DVD you hear her tell her story along with comments from her parents and others in her life. You also hear from some of the Christians who prayed for her during this time. It wasn't until one day when she was asked to actually assist with an abortion, that she was faced with the reality that abortion was killing a baby and that she could no longer support that.

This was a very well produced DVD with videography and narration interspersed with the interviews. Her story is told gently and compassionately and conveys a compelling pro-life message. Quiet, loving, and praying protesters outside the clinic were much more effective, than loud obnoxious ones, who don't show the love of Jesus. The power of prayer is also a strong theme in this story--prayers of family, friends, and compassionate protesters.

I would recommend this DVD and the book to anyone who is on the fence about abortion or who feels that abortion is the solution to an unplanned pregnancy. It would also be great for youth groups to watch together and discuss.

Love Wins

To begin with, I don't think the book deserves the hype and hate we have been reading about in articles or hearing about on television. I found "Love Wins" to be a great read that compels us to have our hearts right with God and live out our Christianity--not just use it as a ticket to heaven in the future, but to bring some heaven on earth now, by helping humanity with it's pain and suffering and hunger and poverty and illness, etc.

In his books and videos, Rob Bell often asks honest, provocative and probing questions, forcing us to think and read and discuss rather than being spoon fed the answers. He often articulates the questions many were thinking but never expressed. He has a way of making some of us who grew up in the church "rethink" what we've always thought or been taught. He examines what scripture says and what Jesus said and meant and what the backstory was. He provides insightful background information which helps in understanding the context in which Jesus said or did things.

Bell explains interpretations of words from the Greek or Hebrew in which the scriptures were written, where there may have been several different words for something we have only one word for. Sometimes these subtle differences can give a fresh perspective, such as his interpretation of the story of the Prodigal Son.

There may be a few things in chapters 3 and 4 that you question or don't agree with, but keep reading. He may answer your questions in a later chapter. You may find you agree with him on many more points than you disagree. I actually welcome the opportunity to be shaken up a bit in my thinking, to stretch my mind and be forced to think outside the box of my traditional thought, as long as it is scriptural, of course. Bell uses scripture to back up all of his points throughout this book.

In chapter 7, Bell states, "God is love, and to refuse this love moves us away from it, in the other direction, and that will, by very definition, be an increasingly unloving, hellish reality. There are consequences…to reject God's grace, to turn from God's love, to resist God's telling, will lead to misery. It is a form of punishment, all on its own." And in chapter 8 he states, "While we continually find grace waiting to pick us up off the ground after we have fallen, there are realities to our choices. While we may get other opportunities, we won't get the one right in front of us again. Jesus reminds us in a number of ways that it's vitally important we take our choices here and now as seriously as we possibly can because they matter more than we can begin to imagine. Jesus urges us to live like the end is here, now, today."

Bell concludes his book with the following: "May you experience this vast, expansive, infinite, indestructible love that has been yours all along. May you discover that this love is as wide as the sky and as small as the cracks in your heart no one else knows about. And may you know, deep in your bones, that love wins.

I call this a pleasant surprise book. I am not sure I would have chosen to read it, except that I was given an advance reading copy from WaterBrook. So I started to skim the book and found that I actually wanted to read it word for word. Readers with varying years of walking with Jesus will glean good nuggets from these pages. One main theme of the book is that Jesus wants us to be his friend (not just a worshipper; not just a worker; not just an admirer). Friendship is reciprocal.

Joanna also talks about our doubts that eat away at the bedrock of our faith, leaving us floundering, gasping for air as we try to keep our spiritual heads above water. We need to realize that some of life's greatest gifts come wrapped in disappointments. Faith is often learned in the crucible of pain. It must be difficult for our loving Father to hold back from constantly running to our rescue, yet in his merciful wisdom he does. God has always been more interested in shaping the character of his children than simply providing them comfort.

We need to learn to listen. We need to learn to discern his voice. Our heavenly father knows the best kind of communication flows out of a relationship. Anything less is just information. Since intimacy with us has always been God's goal, it makes sense that hearing His voice would be linked to that very thing. He wants us to lean in and listen carefully.

"If we want to hear from God, we must learn to respond to what He says. Obedience opens the ears of our hearts. The best way to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength is to love the people who happen to be standing next to us."

"If we want to live resurrected and experience the exchanged life so many heroes of the faith describe, we must first get around to dying. Dying to ourselves until we're dead to the world. This may mean giving up our desire to direct our own lives; giving up our right to be treated fairly; giving up our need to be well thought of; or giving up our appetites for escape (food, television, books, movies, etc.)"

"It is the dark night's of our souls--in those deathlike, midnight places where nothing seems to be happening--that God often does His best work. Preparing our lives--so barren at the moment--for an even greater outpouring of life. For winter always precedes spring."

The final takeaway from the book is that God created us for eternity. We were not created for this earth alone but for an infinite future with God.

I was a huge fan of Mark Batterson's first 2 books "In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day" and "Wild Goose Chase". This third book did not disappoint. I enjoyed the first chapter and his references to Rome, as I am going there in a few months.

Mark reminds us to focus our lives on the most important thing--loving God. We shouldn't spend our time on earth being great at things that don't matter or that don't have heavenly value. We must succeed at what matters most--the great commandment.

Mark also teaches that the Bible was not meant to be read reactively; it was meant to be prayed proactively. We should pray the words of Scripture. We should pray in alignment with God.

Our obedience to God is our own unique translation of the Bible. When we read the Bible do we skip quickly over the parts we do not want to obey? Maybe we should make our "to-do" lists from our daily Bible reading.

Doing the will of God is energizing.
Everything - God = Nothing
Nothing + God = Everything

At the end of the book, Mark invites us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and longer lasting. He invites us to be a part of the next reformation--a primal movement that traces its origins back to ancient catacombs where our ancestors were martyred because they loved God more than they loved their life.

The reader gains hope that there may be a way to "unlock" the autistic person. I am left wondering: is this really possible or is this just fiction?

This is a great book no matter how long you have been a Christ-follower. It is excellent to be reminded that God does communicate with his people in myriad ways--sometimes it is just a nudge or a whisper. We need to be intentional about having times of quiet so we can hear God. There are generally three types of whispers from God: Assurance; Admonition; and Action. We can test these whispers to know whether we are truly hearing from God, by running them past five filters: 1) Is it from God? (in tune with his character); 2) Is it scriptural?; 3) Is it wise?; 4) Is it in tune with my character and how I am wired?; 5) What do people I most trust think about it?

Also available is The Power of a Whisper 4-week DVD study and participant guide. Our small group recently completed this study. We were challenged and had meaningful discussions.
